While TapeHead generally takes the opinion that there are way too many chatty Miramax-funded 'indie' films about [insert ethnicity here] hoods trying to eke out a living on the mean streets of [insert major city here], we actually liked Monument Ave. Why, you ask, does Monument Ave. make it on to our vaunted recommended list when it doesn't even come close to covering new material? It is just a story of small time Irish hoods trying to make it on the mean streets of Boston right? Well, it's because it covers the old material differently. Instead of focusing on plot, it more concerns itself with the reactions of different characters to their situation and how they cope with a miserable and morally ambiguous situation. In the process it draws great performances out of Dennis Leary(!) and Famke Janssen. Second, it has Famke Janssen in it.
