While I'm not a huge fan of the X-Files TV show, it has provided me with many an entertaining post-Simpsons time slot viewing. I find that the stand-alone episodes are the freshest and most exciting ones of the series. So it was with trepidation that I viewed the video release of the X-Files movie (somehow subtitled Fight the Future by fans even though it's just called The X-Files). Not only did this movie have to play by the pre-existing rules of the X-Files universe, but it had to tie together two seasons of the show (last year's and this year's ).
The Big One - Renegade documentarian Michael Moore returned briefly to the big screen with this Miramax release. Last year, Moore wrote a book, Downsize This, and went on a book-signing tour of the country to support it. Along the way, he used his own brand of grass-roots filmmaking to shoot The Big One.
Moore is recognized as a national labor hero thanks to his wonderful freshman effort, Roger and Me, so it's no problem for him to enter into labor disputes even though he's breezing through the towns. While The Big One isn't nearly as good as his first one (Moore seems guilty at times of exploiting his subjects for a good story), his meeting with ultra-slimy Nike CEO Phil Knight is worth the price of rental alone. Knight refuses to go to Indonesia to visit a Nike factory and admits that he's never even been to the country that his company exploits. Back to TapeHead.com Home
