Where does one start writing about this film. . . . Even though it was spat upon by critics and took it hard in the theatres, even though serious horror fans like Halloween, serious critcis like Starman, and serious culties like Escape from New York and They Live better, Big Trouble In Litte China will probably always remain my favorite Carpenter film. And I'm going to hold fast to that statement.
The main reason that this film is great is the same reason it was spat upon and tanked--its cornball premise. But the movie takes corn and makes corn-aide. That is, instead of trying to be overly serious serious or denying the cheeze, celebrates it with a gleeful, winking irony and over-the-top presentation that makies the movie look like it was simply a fucking lot of fun to work on. It's rare, nowadays, that you see a movie that looks like it was actually fun to work on--directors and actors seem to think you gain extra street cred if you go through an ordeal--but, one of the first things they teach you when you perform is "If you have fun, the audience will have fun." It looks like they had fun in this one.
