A video "premiere" of sorts (thanks to the efforts of William Lustig and Elite), as this clever, chilling, and much-acclaimed film has long been one of Hammer Studios' rarest entries. British censors of the time were outraged at the film's content and its release pattern suffered for it (only a rare print has escaped the Hammer vaults since 1968). Just a few years later, Billy Graham campaigned to have The Exorcist banned, claiming that Friedkin's film contained a tangible, malignant power. Did anyone ever REALLY believe that celluloid could exist as a conduit to dark forces?
Fears of the Fallen Angel in his many forms still abide, because this month the Vatican issued a warning that Old Scratch is still knockin' at our doors, and backed it up by issuing the first updated ritual for exorcism since 1614.
