Not that it's a bad movie, necessarily. Admittedly, The Faculty reeks of a soulless work-for-hire project, which is exactly what it is (Williamson's take on the premise was the third attempt, and Rodriguez has admitted that he took this project when plans for a "family film" fell through). What results is a serviceable fusion of H.P. Lovecraft's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" and a later-numbered R.L. Stine Goosebumps. Williamson's flare for witty dialogue and black humor elevates the sheer "seen it all" quality of every twist and turn, and Rodriguez nails down the camera and averts his gaze from the works of John Woo to dare walk in the footsteps of 70's horror masters. This is best evidenced in the truly chilling, Argento-influenced opening in which Principal Drake (Bebe Newarth) is stalked by alien-transformed football coach Willis (Robert Patrick) through the Expressionistic and truly creepy interior of Herrington High.
