Korea isn't really known for its film industry. As a matter of fact, their output to date has been pretty minimal and was mostly comprised of art-house dramas and whatnot. If the Cannes Film Festival this year is any indication, however, there's change in the air. Korean films were all over the place. Big budget Korean action films, at that. One of the most notable (it's been picked up for U.S. distribution by Lion's Gate later this year) was Myung-se Lee's Nowhere to Hide.
Nowhere to Hide's premise is relatively simple: a mafia-related murder is being investigated by Korean Police Detectives Kim and Woo. They stake out the murder location, capture a gangster, torture him to get the name of another gangster, who they capture, torture, and get the name of yet another gangster, etc. Eventually, the Detectives track down the king of the mafia and capture him. End of story.
